Ceylon Leaf is a passionate startup dedicated to delivering the authentic taste of Sri Lanka’s renowned highland tea to tea lovers across the United Kingdom. Our teas are carefully sourced directly from pristine, mist-covered tea gardens in Sri Lanka, where rich soil, cool climates, and generations of traditional expertise create exceptional flavor and aroma. We strongly believe in building sustainable, long-term relationships with local tea growers, supporting fair trade practices, ethical sourcing, and community well-being.

As a growing company, we intentionally accept only limited orders to maintain strict quality standards and ensure every batch receives careful attention. This approach allows us to preserve freshness, consistency, and craftsmanship in every cup. History

Story of Ceylon Tea

Journey through 150+ years of Ceylon Tea history, from James Taylor's first plantation in 1867 to becoming the world's finest tea producer.
1852
1852 - 1877 / The Foundation Era
From 1852 to 1877, James Taylor pioneered Ceylon tea at Loolecondera, establishing plantations, factories, exporting tea to London, and introducing innovations like the Sirocco tea dryer technology that shaped history.
1877
1877 - 1897 / Rapid Expansion
Between 1880 and 1896, mechanisation, auctions, and institutions transformed Ceylon tea. Rolling machines enabled scale, Colombo auctions began, factories expanded, global prices rose, associations formed, and pioneer James Taylor’s legacy endured after his death.
1897
1897 - 1917 / Industry Maturation
By 1899, tea covered nearly 400,000 acres, and in 1915, Thomas Amarasuriya became the first Sri Lankan Chairman of the Planters’ Association.
1977
1977 - 1987 / Modernization Era
From 1980 to 1983, Sri Lanka strengthened its global tea presence by supplying major sports events, introducing green tea production, importing tea for blending and re-export, and adopting the CTC processing method to expand product diversity and exports.
1987
1987 - 1997 / Quality Standards
Between 1992 and 1997, Ceylon Tea reached major milestones, including its 125-year commemoration, formation of the Tea Research Board, tax reforms, privatization of estates, and record growth, with exports rising to 250,000 metric tons globally.
1997
1997 - 2007 / Global Recognition
From 1998 to 2002, global tea trade shifted to Colombo, the Lion logo gained worldwide trademark protection, production surpassed 300,000 metric tons, the Hanthana Tea Museum opened, and the Tea Association of Sri Lanka was established to strengthen industry unity.
2007
2007 - 2017 / Modern Excellence
Between 2008 and 2017, Ceylon Tea achieved historic milestones, surpassing USD 1 billion in export revenue, gaining Geographical Indications certification, earning recognition for ozone-friendly tea production, and proudly celebrating 150 years of excellence in the global tea industry.
